MELANIE KING

LUNAR PORTRAITS

Melanie King’s project, Lunar Portraits, is a photography project where portraits of participants were only asked to look directly up at the moon, allowing for its glow to be the source of light captured on their faces. She did this to highlight the connection from us to our ancestors, and we all have gazed upon the same moon.

“This series highlights humanity’s connection to our celestial neighbour, considering how our ancestors have gazed up at the Full Moon for many thousands of years. The Moon connects humans across timescales and immense distances, as the same Moon can be viewed from vantage points across the entire planet” – King

This is a beautifully composed exhibition, with a really intriguing concept behind it! It has left me having a greater appreciation for minimalistic exhibition setups in order to predominantly draw the focus to the individual pieces of work and what they represent as a full image set.
